格莱美奖，灵魂列车更大的程度上区分了肤色来进行提名。抛开其他因素，灵魂列车在广义上来说是属于黑人自己的格莱美（或者奥斯卡，因为有演员一类奖项）。其影响力，在黑人歌手（艺人）心中自然不言而喻。虽然，进入21世纪以来因为很多原因唱片业遭受打击。在这样的情况下，一股潮流带起的RNB和Rap热潮让业界人士对唱片业又燃起了信心。为了鼓舞更多的歌手以及音乐人创作和推出更有创意的专辑，在随后的几年里开始越来越多的
南非白人歌手也荣幸被提名竞争奖项。
早在90年代奖项曾备受不少争议，其中原因是白人对于奖项明显将其肤色排外。官方曾多次向外界示好，并不是奖项有意排除其他人种（肤色）。其实是因为奖项本身是忠于黑人音乐本身，概念完全不同。官方表示，灵魂列车最佳歌手的定义是R\u0026B/灵魂/爵士类歌手被官方认可才会获奖，奖项不存在任何不公平。至此，灵魂列车以鼓舞更多的歌手，希望为R\u0026B/灵魂音乐融入更多新的色彩而做出贡献。
