《伦敦德里小调》是一首爱尔兰民歌，源于伦敦德里。在历史上，爱尔兰民歌因其演唱的语言不同而分为两类：一类是以爱尔兰语演唱的民歌，另一类是用英语演唱的民歌。由于民歌形成和变化、发展的特殊性，这首民歌最早由谁作词已无法考证。歌曲旋律部分由罗里·戴尔·欧卡汉写于1600年间。后来，弗雷德里克·爱德华·威舍利在1913年填写了歌词，名为《丹尼男孩》（Danny boy），深受人们的喜爱并一直流传至今。从此，这首歌曲便与《夏日最后的玫瑰》《强尼上战场》并称为“三首爱尔兰最负盛名的民谣”。

“伦敦德里”（伦敦德里）是个地名，在爱尔兰北部、濒临大西洋，与英国的首都伦敦无关。“Air”是“曲调”“小曲”之意。由于这首民谣曲调特别优美。历史上出现了多个不同的歌词版本。这种相同曲调多种歌词版本的情况恰恰也反映了中外民歌的一个共同特点：民歌植根于民间，在口头传唱过程中被不断加工、改编、传唱。

这首《 伦敦德里小调》英文名字是Londonderry Air 、或是The Song Of Londonderry，又名《伦敦德里之歌》、《丹尼男孩 》（Danny Boy）；是根据流传在伦敦德里（爱尔兰岛北部的一个小城）一首古老民俗音乐《向库库列英告别》改编而成的。

歌曲是有着悠久历史的爱尔兰民谣，曲子流传至今也有三四百年的历史，以前只有曲调而没有歌词。后来有热心者开始为它填词，有很多种版本，歌词填写到如今也有百年多的时间，至于演奏或演唱的形式，那就更多了。

这首曲子的作曲者为罗利戴尔欧卡汉，英文原名为Rory Dall OCahan，此曲写于1600年间。后来，费德里克魏舍利，英文原名为Frederick Edward Weatherly，他在1913年将其填了DANNY BOY的歌词，深受当时人们的喜爱，而流传至今。罗利戴尔欧卡汉当初写这首歌时，歌名为伦敦德里小调英文原名为Londonderry Air，亦有歌词。伦敦德里是北爱尔兰的一个地名，与英国的首都伦敦无关，不可混淆，Air是咏唱调或小调之意。伦敦德里小调的填词其实亦相当优美，只是DANNY BOY的填词太受欢迎了，所以演唱者选择以DANNY BOY歌词唱的人比较多，其实二种歌词之意境是不分轩的。
