随着案情的调查，出乎两人意料的是，作案枪支的主人锁定在了劳伦斯身上，因为不久前，他曾到相关部门维修过他的苏联TT-33手枪，而拥有这种枪的人可谓凤毛麟角。面对质问，劳伦斯称自己的枪不久前在赌桌上输给了别人。给出相似口供的还有出现在案发现场的一辆林肯汽车的主人阿尔·皮尔，皮尔经营着一家销售纯净水的公司，他说那辆林肯车一直是自己的妻子在开，而几天前刚刚被盗。奥斯汀坚信劳伦斯一定在撒谎，于是暗中跟踪，不想却亲眼目睹了他被一辆突然冲出来的汽车当街撞死。与此同时，考德威尔上校也从皮尔办公室的一处细节发现，他和越南战争有着千丝万缕的联系。而普西迪基地的纯净水一直是皮尔的公司在供应，这其中是否有着某种不为人知的秘密呢？随着调查的深入，考德威尔和奥斯汀的合作渐渐默契起来，他们也意识到，必须尽释前嫌方能将这个惨绝人寰的杀手绳之于法！经过几天的暗中监视，真相终于浮出了水面，皮尔利用从菲律宾进口桶装水作为掩护，将黑市交易的钻石藏在水里，偷运回国。劳伦斯作为内应，每天晚上将桶水倒空，取出钻石。佩蒂之所以遇难，就是执勤当晚偶然目睹了劳伦斯的这一行为。
