白钢于1990年毕业于沈阳药科大学，1993年赴日本留学，1998年获药学博士学位。2000年作为南开大学引进人才回国在生命科学学院任教，在2000年任微生物学系主任，2004年任生命科学学院副院长；其主要社会兼职有：全国高等医药院校规划教材编委，中国天然药物杂志编委，天津市微生物学会理事。

长期从事药学及免疫学相关研究，在生物技术制药，中药现代化等领域积累了丰富的经验。

曾先后主持和承担“863”项目“a-糖酶抑制性降糖中药复方的研究与开发”和“基于结构基因（蛋白）组的药物分子设计”；国家“十五”重点攻关“林业重大病虫害预警及控制技术研究”；国家自然科学基金“假单胞菌感染TS-1138转化ATC合成L-半胱氨酸代谢途径的研究”；天津市重点攻关“基因工程α-2b干扰素新型纯化工艺及制剂研究”；天津市重点基金“中药超灵敏感度免疫学分析法的研究”、“治疗哮喘天然药物的开发及分子机理研究”和“L-半胱氨酸高转化率菌株的构建及代谢调控理论研究”等多项科研项目，发表相关国内外学术论文70余篇, 其中SCI收录论文22篇，此外还申请发明专利多项。
